Reason – Able – Ness
Reason: “The power of the mind to think, understand, and form judgements logically”
Able: “Having the power, skill, means, or opportunity to do something” or “Having considerable skill, proficiency, or intelligence”
-ness: (as a suffix) “The state of being . . .”
How many times have we come across people who are just plain mean? Takes my mind to a post written by Daily Hopeful, Walk in Love, and you wonder why people ever choose to be or act that way.
I believe that one of the reasons a lot of people choose to be mean is that they feel their rights have been violated in one way or the other, and the pride in their hearts will never let that slide, so they react. Like the person who orders sparkling water and is served still, and the water and cup end up on the body of the waiter. Or the person who bumps into you and hauls insults your way when the whole world knows exactly who’s at fault.
But should there ever be a reason to be mean?
We who have trusted in Jesus and believe in the power of His Spirit to transform us from the inside, sometimes find ourselves treading paths that lead us right to the door of meanness and we catch ourselves gripping the handle to let ourselves in. It does take grace to keep us on the other side, and if we ignore the leading of the Holy Spirit, we most likely fall into the trap.
But we’re better than that.
We can choose to be better.
We can be better.
By God’s grace, we are better . . . we’re stronger, we won’t bow to the god of ‘rights’ that cause people to lose themselves in themselves.
We’re better than that.
We can choose to be better.
We can be better.
We can all be reasonable.
YES! Donโt be mean. I love this post and the one Daily Hopeful wrote is amazing too. We donโt know what people are going through. The seed of love, or being nice, could be the seed that leads them to the LORD. A seed of meanness could lead to the very opposite. LORD, thank You for continuing to bless Alethea ๐

Amen! Thank you, Margaret. Such kind words. And it’s so true, seeds of love must always be what we sow into the lives of others, no matter the state of their hearts. ๐

LOVE what you said here…….how we respond to meanness is up to us but I sure need HIS grace and strength to do and to respond in a soft manner. So I think GOD has worked on me to say: forgive them Father, for they know not what they do and to give grace. We might be the only JESUS someone sees in their day. Thanks for this very insightful post and blessings to YOU!!

Thank you, sis. We might be the only Jesus someone sees, that’s so true, so we must be devoted to responding with grace at all times. God bless you!๐
