Be angry but do not sin. Do not let the sun go down on your anger. Ephesians 4:26

Sunset.

When the sun goes down, all that remains is darkness.

Anger.

Every time there is anger, sin lurks in the corner, looking for the opportunity to take over.

Darkness.

Every work of sin is born in darkness, where light cannot expose it.

Sin.

When the darkness meets anger, evil and every form of wickedness begins to take root and grow.

Light.

To never let the sun go down on our anger is to keep watch over our anger so that it is not overshadowed by darkness, where sin will thrive.

Righteousness.

Let the light of God’s truth always shine on our anger.

But anyone who hates another brother or sister is still living and walking in darkness. Such a person does not know the way to go, having been blinded by the darkness. 1 John 2:11

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Ephesians 6:12

If we claim that we have fellowship with him but keep living in darkness, we are lying and not practising the truth. 1 John 1:6

  1. Reminds me of bitterness which I’ve studied a little bit on here lately. It means corrosion. So when someone does something to make us angry we have to take it to the Lord quickly. Anger has a link to bitterness, and that corrosion can start immediately. And what I’ve learned recently is that it has “helpers” not only do we have our internal issues but external as well, like yesterday, a guy said something pretty ignorant to me and I told my wife about it…. she immediately began telling what I should have said and done. And none of it is how the situation could be bettered.

      You’re right about the helpers that fuel our fires. You put it very direct: Take it to the Lord QUICKLY.

In a book I read (a “Christian” book, but not very sound, theologically; however I took this one thing away from it), mention was made of “shadow sickness.” It was explained that, as we look to God, we see light, for He is light. When we look away from God, we cast a shadow in the direction we face, and everything we see is in the shadow. We get sick from that – we can’t see what is true, and we start acting and thinking in wrong ways.

    1. It sounds ‘logically’ true. I guess that’s why we are admonished to fix our eyes on Jesus. It’s funny how every reference of shadow and darkness, apart from being under the shadow of His wings, is linked with evil.

  3. I have personally found that when anger isn’t dealt with in healthy repentance, it’s ugly cousin will rear it’s head, as John mentioned here in the comments. Oh that root of bitterness can spoil even the best. You won’t even know it has taken root, but others will know around you with the fruits.

  4. There is a place darker then anger or bitterness and that is rage. I love the fact God did not say we could not be angry but gave us room to feel it spikes and remember what he said next, take care of it, confess it, pull the spikes out before they get longer and turn into bitterness and start stabbing everyone who gets near us. Rage is the darkest place to go because by then our mind is so over taken by the darkness we cannot do anything but react. In anger we can still respond, even in bitterness we can respond, we are capable of making a choice but rage totally takes over any sense we could ever muster up. Great post. I have been to that darkest of dark place a couple times and never ever want to go back and with God’s help I don’t let the sun go down on my anger if possible. Again, great post, full of wisdom and truth.

  5. This is so good! People in general seem to be angry all the time…….when you abide with Christ, you are very quickly convicted of your anger, you repent right away or at least I do. And honestly, I don’t like it at all getting angry. We are to be HIS hands of peace, mercy and grace for the world around us.
