The one who casts the shadow is defeated. Powerless. Helpless. Toothless. All that's left of him is his shadow that lurks.
So if the things we see could transform us from the inside so that when we are seen, we're associated with a certain trait, attribute or character, shouldn't we expose our eyes only to what will make us better people?
